HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – In Central Oahu, the Wahiawa community came together to celebrate veterans on Monday.
From marching bands to current and future service members, the 78th annual Wahiawa Lions Club Veterans Day Parade was a time for many to honor the legacy of those who served.
The parade stretched from the Wahiawa District Park to Ka’ala Elementary. Along the way, appreciation was on full display.
In attendance was Like Umberto Tito Rivera, who recently retired after 30 years of service in the army.
“It feels real good. It’s good to see that the community is so involved and they appreciate the service of our men and women to our country,” he said. “It’s a beautiful thing and it’s good to come out and be a part of this and see everyone come out and enjoy and celebrate and recognize the service rendered on behlaf of our nation. So it was an awesome day.”
Rivera joined the Army following in his father’s footsteps.
Also watching the parade with his family was Mark Patrick. He joined the Marine Corp in 1971, leaving behind his childhood life on an Iowa farm. He served for 10 years.
“I think it takes a lot to step forward and I think every veteran in the country needs to be recognized and remembered. I think that brings out a trust and a love — that aloha. I think it just all works together better if we remember,” Patrick said.
The veterans also offered a message of unity in today’s politically charged — and seemingly divided climate.
“It seems like we are, but I don’t think as a country we really are. I think it takes just that instance that we come together and when we come together, we’re one,” Patrick added.
“No matter what’s going on, we live in the greatest nation and to be able to defend that, is one of the proudest things I can say that ive ever been a part of,” Rivera said.
After the parade, families continued the fun with a small gathering of food booths and vendors at Ka’ala elementary.
